Red mites are tiny mites about 0.7mm long, and dislike light so spend most of the day hiding in cracks and crevices in the perches and nest boxes of your hen house (and if you have a felt roof on your house, this will be mite-heaven). The mites emerge at night and will crawl on to the birds, sucking their blood. As they feed, the mites change colour from grey to red. Once they have fed, they return to the nooks and crevices of the hen house to sit out the daylight hours.
How do you know if you have mites? Look out for restlessness in your hens, especially if they are not keen to go in to the house or to perch at night, if you notice weight loss and a drop in egg numbers, and the eggs you get have red spots on them (if mites are living in the nest boxes, some will be squashed during the egg laying process). If you birds become lethargic and are pale and anaemic, this may indicate a severe red mite infestation and will be better dealt with using our D-Mite product. This product is perfect for low levels of mites and prevention, and you use our CV Mite Powder in nest boxes, scratch areas, dust baths and on your hens themselves. Below are some quotes from our recent BHWT trial of the product:
"I love it because; it’s safe - no waiting to let your girls in the coop, it's easy, convenient and effective! And great for ‘nervous’ hen owners, as it is so easy to use." Ronda Morritt, York Co-ordinator
"I like the puffer bottle - which seems more robust than others I've had." Rachel Abbey, Hampshire Support Co-ordinator
This product contains silicates which damage the waxy cuticle on the mite's surface, allowing them to dehydrate and die. This product is entirely safe for both owners and their birds, and the mites die within three days of it's application. Use it in the coop and on the birds weekly, especially during the warmer months, and ensure you change all bedding in the house.Red mites don't like living on people, but they will crawl on to your skin while cleaning etc and can cause itching.
Choose either the 1kg or 5kg pack. Now we have the new 400g puffer which is handy and easy to use.
